Late summer storms can be bad, so be prepared.

We are at the front end of tropical storm and hurricane season in the Tri-state area. And again, it looks like an active year, as the first major storm is blowing through this week.

We hope and pray it’s ultimately a quiet year for the greater Hagerstown, MD area, however, there is always a chance for a direct hit. One of the best ways to prepare, is to make sure there are no objects that can cause damage. This includes junk in the yard; dead landscaping; and structures that should have been removed or repaired years ago. Tips for Weathering a Storm

Here are a few tips that can help:

1. Cut back dead or diseased limbs on trees, or the entire tree if necessary. Trees can become very dangerous and may cause more damage to your home than the storm.
2. Put together a comprehensive “Hurricane Kit” (as described in the article link below).
3. Make sure your gutters are clean and in good working order.
4. Inspect your roof. Make sure it is in good shape, with all shingles being tight to the roof line.
5. Make sure you have a place to store all outside furniture — and anything that can moved by heavy winds — which can cause damage.
6. Purchase storm shutters or have a supply of plywood that can cover windows and doors.
7. Have sand bags — or the makings for such — to keep flood waters from entering under doors if your home is in a low area.

NOTE: Fall is also a great season to clean out the “junkie areas” of your home. The cool weather makes it easy to get moving.
